Breastfeeding Problems - Thrush/ Yeast Infection

Thrush is a fungal infection that can be passed between mother and baby with every feed. Your breasts will feel sore and may have red or white patches. Water may feel very uncomfortable if applied to the breast, you may suffer from breast pain and your baby may feed less.

If you examine the baby’s mouth you may see small white spots or patches in his mouth and on his tongue. He may feed less as his mouth is sore. It may also pass through his system and his bottom may also get a red rash. Ask your midwife, health-visitor or doctor to check you and the baby.

Thrush is easily identified and treated although both mum and baby will need to be treated together with anti-fungal medication to prevent cross-infection.

Breastfeeding may be entirely natural but it is not always problem free. Be prepared to experience some problems and see it as an added bonus if you don’t!
