Breastfeeding Questions - Weaning Discomfort
As of yesterday I am weaning my 12 months old baby off the breast.
How long will it take for the milk to dry out and the discomfort to pass?
My breasts are hard and quite full?
Thank you.
Do not stop breastfeeding suddenly. Instead, cut out one feed at a time. Otherwise, you will become engorged and you may get a blocked duct which can cause mastitis.
Breastmilk is made on a supply and demand basis. If the demand reduces, so too will the supply!
You could also try putting a cabbage leaf on each breast for about 20 minutes, 3 times a day. Cabbage leaves contain a chemical which is absorbed through the skin and which helps to dry up breastmilk supply.
Take it slowly. Over a period of two or three weeks you will be able to cut out all the feeds without discomfort.
