Tips for Sterilising Breastfeeding Equipment
Although one of the big bonuses with breastfeeding is that there is no sterilising required prior to feeding, sometimes it may be necessary to give your baby a bottle of expressed breastmilk, or a soother.
In these instances it is vital that all equipment is properly sterilised.
Before you sterilise equipment such as bottles, soothers or breast pumps, always wash them in hot soapy water and rinse them well. You should also make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before placing the washed items in the sterilisng container and again when removing them.
There are several different methods of sterilising:
· using the cold water method with a sterilising solution or tablets
· boiling the covered items in a pan for at least 10 minutes
· placing them in a microwave or steam steriliser.
Each of the above methods require different instructions so it is very important to read and follow the manufacturers instructions carefully.
