Is Breastfeeding Difficult?
The first few days of breastfeeding can be the most testing as neither of you are competent breastfeeders. However, rest assured, it will get easier as time moves along.
At the beginning breastfeeding can be uncomfortable. Your breasts may sting initially and your nipples may feel extremely sensitive and tender. You may notice small blisters appearing on the nipple – newborn babies have an extremely strong suction action!
Remember your nipples have never been subjected to this force before and it is only normal for them to feel tender.
Over the counter nipple protection creams are available which can help sooth sore areas or some people find breast protection shells useful.
An old wives remedy is to place cabbage leaves in your bra although try this with caution as it has been shown to dry up the milk supply so is not really recommended when breastfeeding.
Whilst breastfeeding it is vital you get plenty of rest.
If possible try to rest when the baby is sleeping as exhaustion can affect your milk supply.
After a rest your breasts will feel much fuller. Obviously this is more difficult if you have other small children to look after but even thirty minutes on the sofa is preferable to no rest.
You may find that housework goes by the wayside for the first few weeks while breastfeeding is becoming established!
