Miscarriage - What happens at Hospital?
If you suspect you are miscarrying your baby, after talking about your symptoms and perhaps having an examination by your doctor/ midwife, they may decide to investigate further.
You may be asked to take a pregnancy blood test. This test will look for levels of pregnancy hormone beta HCG. 48 hours later you will be required to repeat this test. If the levels of the pregnancy hormone have dropped, then it means that you have lost the baby. If levels are continuing to rise, you are still pregnant.
You may also be asked to take a blood test to check whether or not you are rhesus negative. If you are, then it means you will need an injection to enable you to carry babies in subsequent pregnancies. Rhesus negative blood can be the reason behind many repeated miscarriages.
You may be referred for an ultrasound scan which will check to see if you are still pregnant and if the baby's heart is beating. However, if the pregnancy is not very advanced it may not be possible to see anything and you will be asked to return within a week or so for a further scan.
