Pregnancy Day by Day: Day 11

On the 11th day of pregnancy you may find you are starting to find some everyday foods and beverages difficult to tolerate. Your sense of smell is starting to become more sensitive and you may begin avoiding foods and drinks you normally enjoy.

In some cases it is believed that this is nature's way of helping protect your baby from foods that may be harmful but in most instances it's not known why pregnant women stop eating and drinking particular foods.

You may deliberately choose to avoid caffeine and alcohol from now onwards. Whilst it is known alcohol can be dangerous in pregnancy and in extreme cases lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, it is not yet known if caffeine is harmful. However, many mothers who can still tolerate tea and coffee often make the switch to caffeine-free tea, coffee and other beverages just in case and many report they notice little difference in taste although they are less agitated than normal and even sleep better as a result!
